Launching a Rural Retail Format for India’s Farming Communities
Our project aimed to create a retail format dedicated to serving India’s rural farming communities, offering essential products such as food, general merchandise, farming tools, agricultural supplements, microfinancing options, and educational resources for improved farm productivity. We began with an in-depth study of farmer behavior, economic cycles, purchasing habits, and seasonal requirements to inform the ideal product mix and service offerings. Following this, we developed a format strategy designed to meet the unique needs of rural customers. Our team assessed unit economics and conducted a comprehensive retail catchment analysis, estimating potential store counts on a city-by-city basis while evaluating the impact of new stores on existing local businesses. A robust growth plan was developed to outline manpower needs, real estate strategy, logistics, and warehousing requirements. This bottoms-up business plan secured board approval, allowing us to proceed with implementation. In execution, we focused on creating a resilient supply chain by establishing vendor relationships, negotiating supply terms, and crafting a merchandising strategy suited to rural demand. We then developed operational processes for the stores, recruited key leadership roles, and selected ERP systems to enable efficient management. Our commitment and attention to detail enabled us to complete this rollout within an unprecedented eight months, providing a valuable retail ecosystem for farmers that integrated vital agricultural resources with financing and educational support, setting a new standard for rural retailing in India.
